I have dreamed of a trip to Machu Pichu for over 30 years. When I first began my pilgrimages to sacred sites in the Celtic lands, I always had an inkling that this Andean site would be part of my pelgrination. And so after leading groups in Glastonbury, Iona, Callanish and Portugal– not to mention the Mountain pilgrimages to the Sierra in the 1980s and 1990s, Mary Jo Saaveda asked me to facilitate one of her famous Peruvian trips. to quote Mary Jo:

I will bring my 24 years of leading pilgrimages in Europe to Urubamba in the Sacred Valley of Peru. Utilizing my extensive experience in creating sacred circles, I will invite you into a heart-filled pilgrimage experience. Sharing my deep knowledge of the labyrinth as an integrative tool for psycho-spiritual development, I will guide you in weaving the experiences of ancient and contemporary Peruvian culture and spiritual practice into our own sacred tapestries for the second half of life. We will meet daily to share our insights, feelings, and discoveries about this land and what it stirs within us. Each morning, we will walk the labyrinth at our sanctuary, Lizzy Wasi, accompanied by flute and song.

Each of my pilgrimages examines the layers of meaning in the sacred sites we visit.
The first layer is the qualities and mysteries of the natural world particular to each site. Next, we explore the layer of our ancient ancestors who responded to the landscape in unique ways. As we attune to the cultural artifacts and learn about indigenous Incan and Peruvian cosmology, we will have the opportunity to reconnect with our own roots in Mother Earth (Pachamama). We will also pay attention to the blend of Christianity and Peruvian culture, tracking how the sacred feminine appears in Mother Mary in churches and shrines. The outermost layer involves how we, as privileged travelers with a multitude of experiences, find meaning in attuning to sacred places and how our consciousness makes connections in our world.
